Ok so you have the best tripod out there. But do you have the best digital cameras to go with that sweet tripod setup? Quite a few people do have a good camera but usually don’t have a good tripod. But in the event that you do have a great tripod but only a so so camera, then you’re missing out on better quality images.

Ok so what is the best digital camera? This is a bit of a tricky question, but the best digital camera really depends on your specific needs. If you like to shoot landscape images, then you’ll want an expensive full frame camera body such as the Canon 5D Mark 2 body. If you like shooting portrait photography, then you’ll also want a full frame camera. If you are into shooting wildlife, you’ll want a crop camera for the extra zoom it gives you. And if you are an avid sports photographer, you’ll want to look at getting a camera body that shoots FAST (something like the Canon 1D Mark 3.

Budget is also a pretty big concern when shopping around for the best camera — there may be a camera that’s unequivocally “the best” but such a camera might be out of your price range! The key is to balance budget and features when it comes to selecting the right camera for your needs.

Manfrotto tripods are great for most people because they are not only cheap, but good quality too. You are not going to get the best tripod out there if you go with a Manfrotto, but you will get a reliable tripod that won’t break down in the field. If you opt for a $25 cheapie tripod made from plastic, you can expect to pay a price when you actually use the tripod. Such tripods are not very stable, a pain in the rear to use, and may suddenly break when you need it the most (I know, it happened to me!).

Finding the right tripod is especially important if you are into landscape photography. There are a lot of different tripods out there to choose from, but some work better for landscape photography than others. Now, the main thing to consider is WEIGHT. The heavier your tripod, the harder it is to haul it around in the field with you. Get a tripod that’s too heavy, and you are not going to want to lug it around when you go hiking. So the compromise here is to find a tripod you can afford, but one that’s not too heavy. If you want the best tripod for landscape photography, I would say go with a Gitzo 1541T. It’s ultra light (less than 2.5lbs with a ballhead on), it’s ultra short (less than 16 inches folded), and it’s stable as a rock with up to 8kg’s. There are also a whole wack of features that make using the tripod easier. However, you can expect to pay over $500 for such a tripod.

For a cheaper option, you might look at some Manfrotto tripods (Gitzo and Manfrotto are in fact owned by the same company). They are cheaper, heavier (made from aluminum and not carbon fiber), but the quality is there. For a well-priced Manfrotto that’s not too heavy to use in the field, you might try the Manfrotto 190XB 3 Section Aluminum Tripod. The price is right and the weight won’t overload you. Keep in mind though, you are not going to be able to get an ultra light tripod if you go with a Manfrotto. Typically, aluminum tripod are going to be twice as heavy as Carbon fiber, so expect your tripod + ballhead to be around 6 or so lbs.

A professional yet affordable tripod, the Manfrotto 055XPROB is a tall model made of aluminum construction. As such, it is extremely inexpensive for its size, though it does weigh more than a tripod of comparable size made of carbon fiber.

Flexibility — a Manfrotto Trademark

In keeping with the aim of making the 055XPROB appropriate for professional photographic work even though it is so very affordable, the Manfrotto Company has elected not to include a head with this tripod. This allows for more user flexibility, since instead of a head there is a plate onto which can be mounted all sorts of different heads. In this way, you can make sure that the tripod is customized to mesh perfectly with your equipment and photographic style.

Appearance and Familiarity of the Manfrotto 055XPROB

This Manfrotto tripod uses a traditional folding design and comes in the most common color of all for camera tripods: black. At first glance it does not appear to be made of aluminum since the metal has been finished completely in black. Since aluminum has been used in tripod construction practically from the inception of the device, photographers will find the weight, size, and feel of this tripod to be familiar.

Weight Considerations for the Manfrotto 055XPROB

The Manfrotto 055XPROB weighs in at slightly over five pounds. This adds a considerable amount to any photographer’s kit or camera bag, but an additional five pounds is not much to be concerned with if the equipment is to be used mainly in an indoor studio and will rarely be moved large distances. Hobbyists who carry their equipment in their car and set up at the side of the road to capture glorious nature shots, for example, will not find this amount of weight to be much of an inconvenience.

However, those who are packing their equipment in for long distances may find that five extra pounds makes a great deal of difference to the amount of effort they must exert to get their camera setup into place. Even carrying a camera bag for a mile over rough terrain can make a photographer wish he’d decided on a more lightweight model.

When it comes to the 055XPROB, a carbon fiber version is available. The model number of this lighter weight tripod is 055CXPRO3. At slightly more than three and a half pounds, the carbon fiber version is significantly less heavy. A good rule of thumb is to go shopping and pick up each tripod in turn to get a feel for how much weight you will be carrying with either version. Carry the tripod across the length of the store and back to simulate a short walk carrying it, and then you might begin to have enough information to make an informed decision about the best weight for you.

Strength Considerations

It’s tempting to believe that the heavier tripod is stronger. We subliminally believe that the metal must be thicker and therefore much more rigid. However, this is not the case. The Manfrotto 055XPROB is not as strong as its carbon fiber equivalent. It is, however, much less expensive and a perfectly adequate tripod for beginners or for those whose photographic style doesn’t involve needing to move the tripod around very often.

Any halfway serious photographer is sooner or later going to conclude that he or she needs a photographic tripod. What is a tripod? It is a stand designed to hold a camera stationary and steady so that the camera operator can pay full attention to other considerations while the camera remains posed correctly for a shot. As the name suggests, tripods are stands that have three legs splayed out in a triangular arrangement for stability.

The most frequent uses of tripods include these common photographic situations:

The camera operator wishes to compose a shot and then arrange lighting and other factors, frequently stopping by the tripod to examine how recent changes have altered and / or enhanced the image the camera will capture.

The camera operator wishes to place himself in a shot. This will obviously require another human being to hold the camera and press the shutter, or a tripod to hold the camera and a remote control to activate the shutter function on the camera.

The camera operator is using a telephoto lens or other equipment which necessitates a long exposure time. Longer exposure times make it more difficult to hold the camera steady by hand. To avoid blurred shots, a tripod is employed.

The camera operator is using a digital camera and is aware of shuttle lag, in which the image is captured a significant number of microseconds after the shutter button is pressed. Again, the problem of holding the camera steady in the interim necessitates the use of a tripod.

What Types of Manfrotto Tripods Are There?

As with most tripod manufacturers, Manfrotto tripods are available made of either aluminum or carbon fiber as their principal construction material. Since both kinds can look similar to the untrained eye, being finished in similar colors, a fail safe way to determine the composition of a Manfrotto tripod is to look at the model number. A plain “X” in the model number indicates a tripod made of aluminum, whereas a “CX” instead tells the consumer that the tripod is made of stronger, lighter, carbon fiber.

Although carbon fiber is the preferred material for tripod construction, aluminum is much more affordable. In Manfrotto tripods, as with other brands of tripods, the lower end models will be made of aluminum and the higher end models will be made of carbon fiber. Similar features may be available at both ends of the spectrum, but the use of carbon fiber to produce a tripod that is both more rigid and durable as well as lighter in terms of weight makes the carbon fiber version well worth the additional price.

In addition, Manfrotto tripods come in a variety of styles designed for different photographic purposes, including table top versions, monopods with spreader bars to keep them steady, and full size eye level tripods.

Keep in mind that Manfrotto owns both Bogen and Gitzo, two of the best tripod brands out there. Bogen is the cheaper brand with most of the tripods being under 250 dollars and made from basalt or aluminum. Gitzo tripods are the Manfrotto premium band of tripods and pretty much the best quality tripods you can buy on the market today. Our personal recommendation is the Gitzo 1541T Traveler tripod which is the best hiking tripod we’ve found.

Factors to Consider When Buying Manfrotto Tripods

Important factors to consider when you are in the market for a Manfrotto tripod include all of the following:

How much weight can you comfortably carry? This will help you decide if you should opt for a lightweight carbon fiber model or save your money and purchase a cheaper aluminum version.

How far do you usually carry your equipment, and in what conditions? If you frequently go backpacking and you want your tripod along to record the trip, a carbon fiber version is a must. On the other hand, if your photographic work takes place mainly in a studio, or if your idea of vacation photography largely involves carrying everything in a car, an aluminum tripod may be very appropriate for your needs.

What sort of photography do you do? For work that is comprised of close ups of small items that you can place on a surface, or intimate shots of items low to the ground such as foliage, a miniature table top tripod may be all you need. Also known as compact tripods, these little ones weigh so little by default that the choice of aluminum or carbon fiber becomes almost moot.

Advanced Features of the Top Models

Some of the best features of high end carbon fiber Manfrotto tripods are also available on their lower end aluminum models, although they tend to be included only on the most expensive aluminum ones. Advanced features include all of the following:

Legs designed in three sections that slide into one another when folded so that the tripod can be packed up to small, compact size.

Tubular legs with extra layers of material for rigidity.

Locking leg levers designed to be ergonomic for ease of setting up and breaking down the tripod.

Center column systems to allow for ease of adjusting camera height.

Combination construction of carbon fiber and magnesium (on carbon fiber models only).

Blank plates in place of tripod heads so that a variety of heads can be attached. In this way, a single tripod can be made to work with multiple camera styles. Tripods with a head permanently attached are much more limited, particularly for the professional who may have dozens of different cameras.

Manfrotto Tripods: Models to Consider

Manfrotto offers an amazing number of different kinds of tripods designed for every type of photographic work. Here are a few of the top recommended models.

1. Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber 3 Section Tripod with Q90 Column and Magnesium Castings (Black)

Weighing in at only 3.6 pounds, which is quite lightweight for a full sized tripod, this model features a level integrated into the top plate. To be sure your equipment is sitting level, all you have to do is read the bubble indicator and make adjustments accordingly. All levers, main castings, and locking collars are designed for ease of use and a central column system allows you to easily raise and lower the camera without ever detaching it from the head. What is even more interesting about this center column system is that you can also move the camera from a horizontal to a vertical position and back with ease, giving the photographer a much needed level of flexibility.

I like this tripod because the legs and center column are made of 100% carbon fiber, without inclusion of any other materials. The legs offer a variety of locked angles that offer additional flexibility of usage: 23, 47, 66, and 89 degrees. Combined with the range of motion of the center column, that gives you a great many different heights you can use this tripod at. It comes standard with a two year limited warranty, telling you that Manfrotto has faith in their products and stands behind them.

2. Manfrotto 190XB 3 Section Aluminum Tripod

Since it is made of aluminum, this tripod is more affordable than the one I reviewed directly above. Its usable height varies from just over three inches up to fifty-seven inches, making it very versatile for a full sized tripod. Even though it is made of aluminum, a weaker material than carbon fiber, this tripod can still withstand a weight load of a full eleven pounds — few cameras weigh more than that.
The tripod itself weighs almost four pounds and comes standard with a 3/8 inch threaded head mount so that you can attach your head of choice. Although light enough to carry when hiking, for long treks the four pounds will add up quickly. Although the locking legs do make it stable on most terrain, it’s nonetheless true that if you extend the column to full height when there is much wind, you will run into instability problems. This is because aluminum is just not as rigid as the more expensive carbon fiber. Still, this is a very adequate tripod for a beginner or an amateur hobbyist, although a profession would probably be better off with a carbon fiber model.

3. Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber 4 Section Tripod with Q90 Column and Magnesium Castings (Black)

This tripod is quite similar to the 055CXPRO3 but features legs divided into four sections rather than three. This allows the tripod to be folded into an even more compact size so that it can fit into the corner of a backpack more easily.

The Final Word

Tripods are an item that photographers, professional and amateur alike, can passionately debate. My personal opinion is that the carbon fiber versions are well worth the additional expense since they take away such a large amount of the weight that camera operators would otherwise need to haul around with them.

My own recommendation out of the tripods reviewed on this page is the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber 3 Section Tripod with Q90 Column and Magnesium Castings (Black). It is the best value for the money. While the same tripod in a four sectioned leg is available, this added functionality doesn’t add a great deal of usefulness, not when one considers the additional cost involved in adding that fourth section. The three section leg is perfectly adequate for most uses and that model already folds up into quite a compact size.

Manfrotto is a well known name when it comes to tripods appropriate for both digital and traditional photographic work, but some people refer to Manfrotto tripods as Bogen products. This is because in the early 1990s, the companies manufacturing and distributing Manfrotto products were purchased by Bogen, an American company committed to distributing imaging equipment.

People began referring to Manfrotto products as Bogen tripods, and this situation lasted for almost twenty years, more than enough time for brand consciousness to shift to the new name among the general public. However, true aficionados of the affordable quality tripods long produced by Manfrotto were aware that the Bogen name was really an overlay.

The situation reversed itself quite recently — in the year 2010 the Bogen Imaging Distribution Network acknowledged its roots and changed its name worldwide. In every country where Bogen operated, it began doing business under the name Manfrotto Distribution. Therefore now, a Bogen Manfrotto tripod can more properly be referred to once again simply as a Manfrotto tripod.

History of Bogen Manfrotto Tripods

The history of Manfrotto tripods stretches back to Italy and the decade of the 1960s. Late during that decade, a photographic reporter named Lino Manfrotto became dissatisfied with the equipment available to him. He needed better stands to hold his materials steady as he composed shots. Aiming to remedy this, he designed a light stand, but at this point he wasn’t interested in mass production, but only in creating better equipment in his own local area.

By the early 1970s, however, Manfrotto was expanding into the commercial arena with his products. Based in Italy and focused on the Italian market at first, the Manfrotto company experienced steady growth but didn’t become an international concern until a British group named Vitec bought him out in the late 1980s. Manfrotto was retained to help manage the new international concern, a wise move since he knew more than anyone else about the product line of Manfrotto tripods.

Interestingly, even before the Bogen buy out in the early 1990s, certain Manfrotto tripods were already being marketed under the Bogen brand name, but this only happened with certain models and in certain regions. The United States was one such region. Then, of course, the whole company came under the umbrella Bogen name, but later reverted back to Manfrotto tripods.

Bogen Manfrotto Tripods Today

Known for making tripods that are affordable yet high quality, Manfrotto today produces both aluminum and carbon fiber varieties of tripods. The latter type is lightweight and strong, while the former type is ideal for hobbyists and beginners who wish to start out with an inexpensive tripod as they learn the craft.Manfrotto also owns the Gitzo Tripods brand, which is widely considered the world’s best tripod manufacturer (of premium tripods).

Interestingly, most Manfrotto models are available in either structural material. How can you tell for certain which is which? Just look at the model numbers. Those labeled with a CX are composed of rigid, lightweight carbon fiber. Bogen Manfrotto tripods that feature only an X in their model number are made of aluminum.

The Manfrotto Company has been in the forefront of evolving tripod technology, making revolutionary improvements available at low cost so that even amateur photographers can produce excellent quality pictures. A tripod is an essential part of a photographer’s equipment, providing the following benefits that are well worth the small cost associated with a Manfrotto tripod:

Holds your camera perfectly steady.

Gives you time to consider your composition from several angles before you finalize your shot.

Relieves you of the worry that you may drop or damage your equipment while taking a shot from a perilous or uncomfortable angle

Allows you to use a longer exposure time, a common requirement when using telephoto lenses. Of course, you can use a longer exposure time without a tripod, but your results will not be good. With the camera’s aperture open for a longer time, you definitely need a tripod to reduce vibration as the camera collects the intended image.

Manfrotto Tripods: One for Every Need

The Manfrotto Company has put a lot of thought into producing tripods that are ideal for many different photography situations. Some Manfrotto tripods let you position your camera very close to the ground or other surface you are photographing on; these are known as table top tripods. Other Manfrotto tripods are tall enough to allow you to photograph at eye level, and include extensions that allow you to lift the camera even higher than that and still maintain perfect stability.

With a tripod holding your camera steady, you as a photographer can focus on composition, placement, and lighting. A tripod allows you to repeatedly check how the shot will look before you commit to taking the picture. In the days of digital photography this may matter less; all you are doing is recording an image on a memory card that can be erased and reused as needed. If you are still using film that must be developed using expensive and perishable chemicals, however, it’s essential that you not waste resources on shots that won’t turn out the way you intend.

Digital photography, however, is no reason to decide you don’t need a tripod. Digital cameras, particularly the ones on the low end of the cost spectrum, have a definite problem with shutter lag, meaning that the image snapped is often recorded some number of microseconds after the operator has pressed the shutter button. If you move in the meantime, you will get a blurry image that must be deleted as it’s all but worthless. A Manfrotto tripod can solve this unintentional movement problem completely.

Affordable Quality from Manfrotto

Manfrotto tripods are made of durable materials such as carbon fiber that will last for years and even decades. Even better, Manfrotto offers a full line of tripods so that photographers can find one that will suit their budgets. Whether you are an amateur hobbyist who merely needs the most basic model or you are a professional photographer who prefers to work with a different style of tripod for each genre of photographs you produce, Manfrotto has an affordable yet quality solution for you.

Traditional Full Size Tripods

Types of Manfrotto Tripods: The Monopod

A monopod, also known as a unipod, isn’t technically a tripod, since it doesn’t have three full legs. However, it is generally classed as a tripod because it performs the same function: that of holding a camera still and steady so that a photographer can take an absolutely stellar photograph.

Some monopods are merely telescopic attachments that lift a camera up beyond the normal height. The Manfrotto monopod, in contrast, is a hybrid of a true monopod and a tripod because it has a self standing feature at the bottom in the form of rods the splay out to keep the monopod upright even when nobody is holding it steady. Thus, the Manfrotto monopod becomes a very inexpensive alternative to the traditional three legged tripod.

Types of Manfrotto Tripods: The Table Top Tripod

An amateur’s traditional impression of a tripod is a full scale self standing mechanism with three legs, that when fully set up holds a camera at approximately eye level. While it is true that many Manfrotto tripods fall into this category, the company also produces smaller tripods designed for use on top of a table.

For example, the Manfrotto 209-14 Table Top Tripod retails for less than thirty dollars and is portable enough to fit into any standard sized camera bad. When closed, it measures slightly over five inches and weighs less than one fifth of a pound, yet can handle a load of over four pounds — a weight far in excess of the average camera. This tripod is ideal for close in photography of collectibles and knick knacks, and when mounted on a table of sufficient height, can also be used for portrait photography.

A more elaborate table top option is the Manfrotto 345 Table Top Tripod with Ball Head, available for less than $110.00 at online retailers. This tripod assembly includes the basic 209 tripod listed above, but also includes accessories such as a ball head for a more secure attachment to a camera, an extension column, and a camera bag designed specifically to fit the tripod. Because of the extension, its maximum height is over seventeen inches, which means that its folded length is also longer. It weighs more than the 209 model but offers much more functionality as well, though its load capacity remains approximately the same.

Traditional Full Size Manfrotto Tripods

Manfrotto excels in producing affordable full scale tripods such as the Manfrotto 7322YB available for less than a hundred dollars or the professional 055XPROB which lists between two and five hundred dollars, depending on the features selected. Advanced features of higher end Manfrotto tripods include:

Counter spring systems

Three way heads

Full tilt axis with fixed springs for shock absorption

Easy camera positioning since springs oppose some of the force exerted by the weight of the camera.

Choosing a tripod for your digital or traditional photographic work involves making several key decisions about your needs and your budget. Read through this brief guide to get a sense of what matters most to you when it comes to the ideal tripod.

Two Basic Approaches to Tripods

Most tripods are made from one of two basic construction materials:

Carbon fiber

Aluminum

Each has its own individual selling points. Aluminum becomes freezing cold to the touch much more readily than carbon fiber, and so it will be more uncomfortable to handle when you are doing outdoor winter photography. Aluminum is also ounce for ounce a much weaker metal, which means that if two tripods weight the same, the aluminum one will be less sturdy. If your camera equipment is heavy and expensive and you don’t want your tripod to collapse and damage it, this is an important consideration.

With these major drawbacks, why would anyone choose an aluminum tripod? The answer can be summed up in one simple word: price. Aluminum tripods are very inexpensive compared to carbon fiber models. It all comes back to the old adage that you get what you pay for. Carbon fiber tripods will cost more, but it will weigh less, be stronger and more durable, and will be comfortable to handle even on the coldest winter days or nights.

Two Kinds of Tripod Feet

In addition to being made of carbon fiber or aluminum, tripod models will also feature at least one of two styles of foot:

Feet designed for indoor photography

Feet designed for outdoor photography

Tripods designed for interior work will generally have a rubber bottom that will prevent the tripod from slipping around on smooth surfaces such as floors. While this foot arrangement can indeed be used outdoors as well, it is not optimal. For outdoor photography it is best to have a tripod with feet that end in a little point much like a spike. This pointed end will allow you to drive each tripod leg into soft earth so that the tripod is more or less attached to the ground and can’t shift about.

If you plan to do roughly equal amounts of indoor and outdoor photography, it’s best to purchase a tripod with removable rubber ends to the legs; these can be replaced with leg ends suitable for outdoor and even wilderness photography.

Three Height Considerations when You Choose a Tripod

Each tripod will have a maximum and minimum height that you should consider. If the maximum height you need is below your eye level, you are in the market for what is known as a compact tripod. This will be the right choice for you if you specialize in shooting items that are close to the ground or floor, for example, if your main interest is shooting foliage.

Compact tripods can be quite handy because they are both lighter and smaller both when folded and unfolded.

If, however, you mainly shoot items that are at your eye level or above, you should look into purchasing a full size tripod. This will both cost more and weigh more than a compact tripod, but is worth the extra expense if it meets your needs. Anyone taking photographs of landscapes, for example, will find a compact tripod to be very unsatisfactory.

If you are looking for a tripod that’s both high quality and value priced, it would be hard to find better tripods than Manfrotto tripods.

Getting a tripod for a camera or video system is no easy task. You might think it’s as simple as heading down to your local department store to buy whatever cheap tripod you can find, but this is not the best way to buy a tripod.

For one, if you plan to take pictures with a tripod, stability is the most important feature. If your tripod is not stable, then your photos won’t be as sharp as they could be. Now for the average person using a point and shoot camera, a tripod really has no place in their shooting activities. But if you are a landscape, wildlife, or portrait photographer and you value maximum sharpness in your photos, then you are going to want to buy a tripod that’s stable.

Click here to see the best prices on Manfrotto Tripods on Amazon.com

Stability, you see, comes with a price. You can pick up cheap plastic tripods for 20 bucks, but these tripods wont’ be very stable in the field. There are also other features to look for too like ease of use. This is a very big deal when you are actually using the tripod. A tripod that’s hard to use is a tripod that you won’t want to use.

So where does the Manfrotto tripod come into play? Well, Manfrotto has been one of the premier tripod brands for many years now. Manfrotto targets the budget market. They don’t manufacture the top notch tripods that offer the best in terms of features and performance, but they do make very solid tripods for the budget level.

Now you can buy Manfrotto tripods for pretty much any price point. The cheapest tripods will run you around 30 bucks. However, when buying a tripod, there are three things you need do consider: stability, weight, and price. You can modify any two of these “variables” but one of the variables will stay the same. For example, you can get a light and stable tripod, but it will be expensive. You can get a cheap and stable tripod, but it will be heavy.

Tripods are usually constructed out of aluminum, plastic, or carbon fibre. Plastic is the cheapest kind of tripod, but it offers the least stability and is not recommended. Aluminum is a nice compromise between price and stability, but they are heavier. Carbon fiber is the best material to construct a tripod from but it’s also the most expensive. Basically, carbon fiber tripods are the best you can get in terms of stability and light weight. Manfrotto tripods come in all three materials. If you are looking for a budget tripod, you may want to consider looking at one of their aluminum line of tripods.

The Bogen Manfrotto tripod is one of the best line of Manfrotto tripods out there. When it comes to buying a tripod, it’s not as simple as you may think. There are many different tripod brands out there, but few of the brands offer any substantial quality. The Bogen line of Manfrotto tripods has been around for decades now and they have a solid reputation for being both affordable and high quality.

When you want to buy a new tripod, here is what usually happens. You walk into your local department store and throw down 20 or thirty dollars for a cheap plastic tripod. You user that tripod with your camera system for a couple months and then switch. Why? Because you find the tripod system so frustrating to use because of a complete lack of ergonomics or the tripod simply breaks. You then end up buying a slightly better tripod only to experience the same thing.

Why not avoid this hassle and buy a good tripod right from the get go? You can spend anywhere from 20 bucks to 700 bucks on a tripod. The Bogen Manfrotto line is a good, mid-tier solution for those who want a well engineered tripod that’s both stable and affordable.

Now, you can’t expect the lightest and most feature rich tripods (Gitzo tripods win those awards), but Manfrotto tripods have a very good reputation – and a well deserved one at that. Now it really depends on what sort of features you are looking for in a good tripod. There are some things you need to consider before purchasing a tripod.

For one, you need to think about your height. Some tripods are made for taller people and some are made for shorter people. You are also going to need to consider the size of the tripod when the legs have been contracted. Tripods that are taller will be less portable. Then you need to consider how many leg extensions are on the tripod. Tripods with more extensions (leg joints that retract) can contract smaller, but are often less “stable.” You are going to need to think about the weight of the tripod too. In fact, many photographers consider the weight to be one of the most important features. If you have a heavy tripod, it’s very difficult to travel with it. You will also need to think about the type of tripod ballhead you want to add to your tripod – this is the connection point between your camera and your ballhead.

So as you see, picking out the best tripod is a tough choice. You really need to look at your specific needs then choose a tripod based on those. You certainly won’t go wrong with a Manfrotto Bogen tripod, however – all of their tripods are fairly high quality and affordable.
